One of the main things that I wanted to start doing once I got the site up was to do features and mini-features of not only amazing interesting in-depth builds, but also my friend’s on-going projects as well. As much as I like to emphasize on quality when it comes to this site, I also want to bring you guys insight on the people who I’ve met during my journey of establishing Midnightrush into what it is today.
I know most of you wanted a feature of Caymen’s 350Z, but that is coming later as his car is getting some much-needed attention to the interior. Today, we’re going to be talking about a pretty uncommon platform when it comes to modifications; Joey Ovalle’s 2001 Acura CL.
I met Joey back in 2014 when i was starting out in photography. It was at a deck meet that was recently starting to get popular and my friend Karl Amboya and I were walking around looking at cars to take photos of. I saw this white Acura CL that had no hood on it or a bumper. My first thought was “what the hell happened”. I remember specifically that Karl was making some jokes about how the intake gave him an extra 200+hp, and at that moment, Joey overheard us and came over and told us why the hood and bumper weren’t on.
Apparently he had gotten into an accident with the car a couple of months before and he had just gotten it in running condition, hence why there is no bumper or hood. It actually took him awhile until he got the bumper on, which I think he had to get it painted or something.
Anyways fast forward to today and not only is he my barber now (I’m really picky when it comes to who I let cut my hair), but he’s also a member of our team. He’s one of the most humbling people I’ve met in awhile, and to see his car progress along with him is a blessing to see.
His car has came a pretty long way from when I first saw it. He switched from some unknown brand (and blown) coilovers to a D2 bag setup. I’m not going to spare any details since I plan on doing a full feature on this a little later once spring time rolls around.
He also has another set of wheels now, for one set for the winter and one set for car show season. His winter set are the wheels that you saw in the beginning of this feature. This is summer set of wheels of course which he just got on; Yoshihara Design Champions. I personally don’t like these wheels at all on certain cars but surprisingly the CL pulls it off well…
As well as some changes to the interior and a muffler delete (iirc). He has a lot of plans on what he wants to do with the CL over the next few upcoming months. Can’t wait to see what he does to it, because in reality you don’t see too many CLs like this modified, but that is why I believe this CL is one-of-a-kind.
